According to a recent article by the American Medical News, visits to emergency departments are increasing and are likely to increase with healthcare reform.  ER visits rose from 107.5 million in 2001 to 123.8 million in 2008 according to the article.  At the same time, the demand for physician services dwarfed the supply of residency trained emergency physicians.
