More than 75% of new physicians received at least 50 recruiting job solicitations during medical school, according to a new survey conducted by Merritt Hawkins physician search firm. The survey contacted more than 300 medical students in their last year of training.
According to the study, a national physician shortage is responsible for this massive recruitment effort. Resultantly, new physicians must learn quickly which physician services they choose to provide. What is clear from the research, is that most new physicians choose not to practice in rural communities. This will undoubtedly challenge an already plagued rural hospital and healthcare system, where access to care is limited. It is likely, that the need for outsourced physician services to the rural hospitals will increase.
