Dr. Nicolas Bazan, a neuroscientist at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, along with his team, made a medical discovery that could be life-changing in terms of patient care.
An article that ran in the Medical Breakthroughs section of “Ivanhoe,” reported that just a single injection of DHA, a component found in fish oil, can prevent damage to the brain caused by a stroke, for up to five hours.
“In fact, it does both, protection and reversion of cells that are in the process of being severely injured,” Dr. Bazan said.
A person has a stroke when there is a disconnect of blood to the brain, which is why it is sometimes referred to as a “brain attack.” Nearly 200 people in this country die annually, the result being stroke-related, while nearly 800 suffer from strokes.
It is essential to seek treatment from a physician services provider, as soon as humanly possible, after an attack.
A stroke can significantly alter a person’s life. Before an attack, some people suffer paralysis, numbness, or confusion, and/or impaired vision.
According to the American Heart Association, “brain injury from a stroke can affect eyesight, touch, movement of arms or legs, speech and the ability to understand speech. It also can affect behavioral and thought patterns, and memory and emotions. Paralysis or weakness on one side of the body is common, as well.”
But this medical discovery could be the way to stop and even reverse that damage. Within their studies, Dr. Bazan and his team have found that, DHA, once inside the brain, continues to shrink the injured area, from the first day to the seventh day.
“This could be the way to protect and minimize the terrible consequences of stroke.” Dr. Bazan said.
