Hospitals and nursing homes are utilizing traditional care to improve their readmission rates. According to a recent story in FierceHealthcare, hospital reimbursements are on the line, and hospitals are looking to improve their readmission rates.
The report states, “In fiscal year 2013, hospitals will be penalized by 1 percent for high readmission rates under the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program. In 2014, they will face a 2 percent penalty and, in 2015, a 3 percent penalty.” Thus, at a time where hospital margins are eroding, additional penalties and cost for readmissions must be avoided. Hospital physicians and other physician services will undoubtedly face similar sanctions for accountable care improvement opportunities.
